| UNESCO is the United Nations’ lead agency for Physical Education and Sport (PES). |
 |
Assistance and guidance services are provided for governments, NGOs, and experts to debate the evolving challenges of physical education and sport. The organization also assists and advises Member States wishing to elaborate or strengthen their training system in physical education. Furthermore, it offers its expertise in the design and implementation of development programmes in the domain of sport. And UNESCO provides guidance, advisory services and assessments in related areas such as culture and social development; for example, to promote and develop traditional sport and games.
This programme focuses on the following divers themes:In addition, UNESCO plays the secretariat role for the Inter-governmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport (CIGEPS). This Committee, composed of 18 elected Member States, has been created to promote international cooperation in the sphere of physical activity to strengthening peace, friendship, understanding, and mutual respect between peoples.

21-10-2009 (UNESCOPRESS) - The Conference of States Parties to the International Convention against Doping in Sport took place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris from 26 to 28 October. Unanimously adopted by UNESCO’s General Conference on 19 October 2005, the Convention has already been ratified by 127 States. Approximately 250 government representatives discussed the future of the fight against doping in sport at the conference.
