International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Article 25: Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.

The United Nations General Assembly in resolution 47/196 of 22 December 1992, declared 17 October International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. It invited intergovernmental organizations to support countries’ efforts in devoting the day to presenting and promoting activities on the eradication of poverty and destitution, as appropriate in the national context.

UNESCO's Social and Human Sciences Sector is organizing two days of activities in observance of this day at Headquarters and supporting national level activities elsewhere. On 18-19 October 2004 in Paris, a series of seminars and other events entitled “Poverty, Next Frontier in the Human Rights Struggle” will take place. The aim of these events is to broaden understanding of the link between poverty eradication efforts and human rights and strengthening the Organization’s work in this field.

The seminars and lectures will contribute to the international dialogue on poverty and human rights underway throughout the United Nations and achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Both will advance understanding of the ethical, philosophical, legal, social and economic dimensions implicit in the human rights approach to poverty. The seminars will engage both UNESCO and its partners in discussions on how this approach has been adopted into their programming, the contribution that it has made and the challenges encountered in implementing poverty eradication work within a human rights framework.
