Under the high patronage of Mister Jacques Chirac, President of the French Republic
The World Forum on Human Rights is dedicated to the memory of Mr Sergio Vieira de Mello, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, killed in Baghdad on 19 August 2003 and to the International Year to Commemorate the Struggle Against Slavery and its Abolition.
"We all have a part to play in making the enjoyment of all human rights a reality for everyone"
Sergio Vieira de Mello
The First Forum was organised by the City of Nantes (France), at the initiative of and with support of UNESCO, from 16 to 19 May 2004. It was organized under the high patronage of Mr Jacques Chirac, President of the French Republic. The First Forum was also dedicated to the International Year to Commemorate the Struggle Against Slavery and its Abolition. It brought together on an equal footing more than 1,000 participants of 70 different nationalities, representatives of all categories of actors involved in the promotion and protection of human rights around the world.
This allowed an extensive exchange of knowledge, ideas and experiences on how to create global alliances to address today's most pressing challenges, including terrorism, discrimination and poverty, the three main themes of the Forum.
