International migration, urban development, local populations keen to become involved in drawing up public policies, etc. Today’s world keeps changing. Through its support for social science research and its efforts to share the findings with as many people as possible, UNESCO contributes to a better understanding of current trends on the part of the international community, thus helping to improve countries’ responses to the challenges posed by change.
In UNESCO it is the Social and Human Sciences Sector (SHS) which is responsible for coordinating the only United Nations programme on Management of Social Transformations (the MOST Programme). It strives to strengthen the links between researchers and, in the broadest sense of the term, the policy-making community.See also:

26-09-2009 (UNESCOPRESS) - On the eve of the opening of the 35th General Conference of UNESCO, 128 young people from 89 countries and some 84 observers representing 68 organizations took part in the 6th UNESCO Youth Forum in Paris, which was held from 1 to 3 October at UNESCO. This year’s theme was “Investing out of the crisis: towards a partnership between UNESCO and youth organizations”.

25-09-2009 (UNESCO) - Ministers of Social Development, social science researchers and representatives from NGOs and the private sector from all over the world met at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris (France) from 28 to 30 September 2009 for the 9th session of the Intergovernmental Council of UNESCO’s Management of Social Transformations Programme (MOST), to analyze the social impact of the global economic crisis.

17-09-2009 (UNESCO) - The UNESCO MOST Programme, the Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) of the Dominican Republic, the Centro Latinoamericano de Economía Humana (CLAEH) and the Consejo Latinoamericano de Ciencias Sociales (CLACSO) are organizing the third session of the MOST Summer University entitled “Links between Social Sciences and Policy; Social Development Policies during the crisis”. It will take place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from 7 to 11 December 2009. The deadline for application is extended until Wednesday 28 October 2009.

20-05-2009 (UNESCOPRESS) - Koïchiro Matsuura, the Director-General of UNESCO, has awarded the 2009 UNESCO International José Martí Prize to Atilio Alberto Borón, former Executive Secretary of the Latin American and Caribbean Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO). The Prize will be presented during a ceremony in Havana (Cuba) on 17 July.
