UNESCO was responsible for instituting a World Philosophy Day, now an event whose popularity is growing year by year. On International Women’s Day, 8 March 2007, UNESCO called for a worldwide network of women philosophers. This initiative shows how philosophy at UNESCO is constantly striving to bring to the fore the great issues at stake in the modern world.
Indeed, the Organization itself arose out of the desire to explore the necessary conditions for lasting peace and security in the world and it has always maintained close links with “philosophy”, not in the sense of a speculative or rule-making system, but as a critical spirit of questioning which enables us to give meaning to life and conduct in the international arena. This work, far from being an exhaustive account, gives an insight into an organization which, by providing an institutional response to a philosophical question, is itself a philosophical institution in many ways.
