[disponible uniquement en anglais]
This brochure is part of a series of brochures published by UNESCO and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to raise public awareness of disasters.

The programme for Awareness and Preparedness for Emergencies at Local Level (APELL) was developed by the UNEP to minimise the occurrence and harmful effects of technological accidents and environmental emergencies. The APELL approach is to identify and create awareness of risks in industrialised communities, to initiate measures for risk reduction and mitigation, and to develop co-ordinated preparedness between the industry, the local authorities and the local population.
This is a 4 page brochure explaining the importance of school safety in hazard-prone areas as well as education for disaster reduction.
It also provides information on the roles of UNESCO, UNEP and APPEL in the field of disaster reduction.
