Climate change is expected to affect all people and all ecosystems. Many of these effects will be negative, but increasing resilience can improve our ability to adapt to change.
- The current world population of 6.5 billion is expected to reach 9.1 billion by 2050
- 2.1 billion people live on less than US$ 2 a day
- Almost 1 billion people live on less than US$ 1 a day
- 1.6 billion people have no access to electricity
- 2.4 billion people lack access to modern fuels for cooking and heating
- 1.1 billion people do not have access to an improved source of drinking water
- Climate change is expected to put 49 million extra people at risk of hunger by 2020, and 132 million by 2050
- 56 million people live along coastlines which would be flooded by a one-meter rise in sea level
- The ecological footprint of all nations in 2006 exceeded the capacity of the Earth by 30%
- Ecosystems on land and sea are already being profoundly affected
