The Network of Youth Excellence nourishes budding talent


Supported by UNESCO, the Network of Youth Excellence, which organizes extra-curricular research for talented students aged 14-21 years to give early exposure to research, met Lake Balaton, Hungary, 20-22 October for their third biannual meeting.

The Network comprises 19 member organizations from Africa, America, Asia and Europe. It was founded in 2002 by a group of NGOs working in the field of talent recruitment for scientific research to help give talented students the opportunity to do research as a means to encourage them to take up a career in science. The Network is inspired by recommendations adopted by the World Conference on Science, organized in Hungary in 1999 by UNESCO and ICSU.

 

At its meeting, the Network decided to set up task forces to organize collaborative, multidisciplinary research for budding talents from around the world. The students and their teachers will be able to take part in international exchanges, submit their research programmes for evaluation and join a ‘network of networks’ involving not only themselves and their teachers but also their mentors, parents, organizers, sponsors and all other interested parties. A Student Board is also to be established to allow the young scientists to organize themselves.

 

Last week’s meeting on Lake Balaton in Hungary was co-sponsored by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, UNESCO and the European Molecular Biology Organization. The European Union was represented by Begona Arrao, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts  by Gilbert Fayl and UNESCO by Julia Hasler.
