The workshop was co-organized by UNESCO and the Department for Research Cooperation of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA/SAREC).
The workshop, organized within the framework of the International Basic Sciences Programme, was hosted by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. About 30 participants discussed the role of, and support to be given to basic sciences and the question of how to demonstrate the impact of basic sciences in achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
