CARISCIENCE is a network of R&D and Postgraduate Programmes in the Basic Sciences in the Caribbean, functioning in the framework of Higher-Education institutions and supported by international co-operation organizations such as UNESCO. It was officially launched at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies in Jamaica on June 1, 1999 by the Vice-Chancellor, Sir Rex Nettleford, with the participation and endorsement of the main academic centres in the Caribbean. It is an organization administered by researchers for researchers and involves scientists in Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. Membership is open to any established Research Centre or Unit in these countries. Consolidation of the Network was formalized by this Memorandum on Co-operation in Basic and Engineering sciences.
The 3rd Annual General Meeting of CARISCIENCE was hosted by the University of Technology in Jamaica in October, 2002. Delegates from Barbados, Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago attended said meeting. The 4th Annual General Meeting of CARISCIENCE is to be held in Suriname from 10-12 October 2003.
Other ongoing activities of the Network for the current biennium include:
(a) 7 academic visits for Senior Academics within the Caribbean,
(b) 2 R&D Projects,
(c) 3 Workshops.
