El Centro Internacional de Radiaciones de Sincrotrón para Ciencias Experimentales y Aplicadas en Oriente Medio (SESAME), se creó en tanto que organización intergubernamental, bajo los auspicios de la UNESCO, el 15 de abril de 2004, en Allan (Jordania).
En agosto de 2007, Irán se convirtió en miembro de SESAME. Los miembros actuales de SESAME son Bahrein, Chipre, Egipto, Irán, Israel, Jordania, Pakistán, la Autoridad Palestina, y Turquía. Los países observadores son Alemania, los Estados Unidos, Francia, Grecia, Italia, Kuwait, Portugal, el Reino Unido, la Federación Rusa y Suecia. Asimismo, los Emiratos Árabes Unidos y el Japón, que desempeñaron un gran papel en las primeras etapas del proyecto, están en vías de confirmar sus estatutos con el Centro.
SESAME donará un laboratorio de ciencias fundamentales y de aplicaciones múltiples de reputación mundial en Oriente Medio. Existen actualmente más de 50 fuentes de radiación sincrotrón en servicio en el mundo, pero ésta será la primera para el Oriente Medio y el Mediterráneo. SESAME definió cinco orientaciones científicas para su programa: ciencias físicas, biología y ciencias médicas, ciencias del medio ambiente, aplicaciones industriales, y arqueología.
La fotografía, representando a Su Majestad el Rey Abdullah II de Jordania y al Director General de la UNESCO, Koïchura Matsuura, se tomó el 6 de enero de 2003, en la Universidad de Ciencias Aplicadas Al-Balqa' (Jordania), en el momento de poner la primera piedra del edificio que albergará el Centro SÉSAMO cuya construcción quedará terminada durante el año 2008.

Eighteen scientists and engineers from the Middle East have spent 2 years working on accelerator projects in European laboratories. Several of them have now joined the SESAME technical staff team and others are expected to do so in the future.
