Prof. Angus McEwan from Australia served IOC as a member of the Australian delegation to IOC and as a scientific expert through 1982 to 2004. From 1982 to 1990 he was a member of the IOC/SCOR Committee on Climate Changes and the Ocean to become in 1987 chairman of this committee which he occupied till 1990. He was one of the founders of the Global Ocean Observing System. He was a member of the GOOS Steering Committee from 1995-2003 when strategic plans for GOOS and NEARGOOS were developed and the Chair of Intergovernmental GOOS Committee from 1998-2001. In the period from 2000-2002 he chaired the IOC Group on Oceanographic Data Exchange Policy and partipated in the strategic development of the joint WMO/IOC Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology.
