The 13th Latin American Congress on Marine Sciences and the 8th Cuban Congress on Marine Sciences were held in the International Conference Center in Havana, 26–30 October 2009.

There was a special session dedicated to the IOC 50th Anniversary held in conjunction with the events, and associated posters exhibited on the 50 years of marine sciences in Cuba. A Children's Fair on Marine Sciences was organized in April 2010, with a special programme dedicated to IOC. Around 700 children and teenagers from all Cuban provinces attended. website.
