With just over 100 days and two weeks of actual negotiating days remaining before the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Climate Change Conference (COP 15) convenes from 7 to 18 December, pressure is building for governments to reach a fair, balanced and effective agreement on this urgent issue.
To support governments and all stakeholders in meeting this important challenge, the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) is working together with interested country Missions to bring to the UN a series of high-level speakers who will provide the most up-to-date analysis of the economic, social and environmental basis for action on climate change.
The first of such talks will be given by the Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, in a presentation entitled “The Scientific Basis for Climate Policy”. Dr. Pachauri will discuss science as the basis for action on climate change, covering also the substantive issues to be discussed at the Secretary-General's Climate Change Summit to be held on 22 September.
The event, organized by the Missions of Pakistan and Sweden, with support from the UN DESA Division for Sustainable Development, will take place on Wednesday, 26 August from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 p.m. in the ECOSOC Chamber at UN Headquarters, New York.
All Member States, UN staff and interested stakeholders with access to UN premises are invited to attend this important event.
Organizers hope that Dr. Pachauri’s briefing will elucidate the science of climate change in a way that spurs greater understanding of the need for action as well as a renewed spirit for a successful outcome in Copenhagen.
Next in this briefing series, DESA, in partnership with key organizing countries, will bring Nobel Laureate Dr. Joseph Stiglitz to discuss the economic dimensions of climate change. This event will be held on 8 September from 1:30 to 4:00 p.m., also in the ECOSOC Chamber in UN Headquarters in New York.
