Launch of Japan Geoparks Committee

The Japan Geopark Committee is holding an official Launch Ceremony on 20 February 2009 in Tokyo, Japan.

The ceremony is held to celebrate the launch of seven geoparks as Japanese local geoparks and also to celebrate the official launch of the Japan Geoparks Network which started last year as a preparatory liaison council.

Since 2004, which is the founding year of the Global Network of National Geoparks under UNESCO, Japan has started to promote geological heritage activities. More than a dozen communities in Japan are currently cooperating under the umbrella of a National Japanese Geoparks Network. More
