Only two members of each Delegation may be in Room X. Other members and participants may follow the event from Room I, where they can watch a webcast of the debates. A member of the Secretariat will be available in Room I to answer queries.

It is organized in response to the recommendations made by the Ministers of Science and Technology of the G-77 countries and China at their last meeting in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro, from 2 to 5 September 2006), as well as by the Ministers of Science and Technology of South-East European countries (Ljubljana, Slovenia, on 28 and 29 September 2006), who called upon UNESCO to organize global conferences for Ministers of Science and Technology on a regular basis.

Ministers of Science and Technology or Ministers whose portfolios include higher education, in particular science education, who have been designated by their country to participate in the Ministerial Round were invited to complete the Priority Assessment Survey that has been prepared and to return it by e-mail to the Director of the Division of Basic and Engineering Sciences (Mr M. Nalecz: m.nalecz@unesco.org) or fax (+33-(0)1 45.68.58.21) before 1 September 2007 so that their country’s position on issues to be addressed at the Round Table might be satisfactorily taken into account.

As a background document, a review of Science and Technology meetings has been elaborated as a contribution to the identification of the issues to be addressed. This report summarizes the findings of a review of Science and Technology meetings (Conferences, Round Tables, etc.) at Ministerial level across the world, at regional as well as at global level, during the period 1996-2006.

The Preliminary Draft Outline of the Programme of the Ministerial Round Table opens dialogue with Ministers on issues to be highlighted in the programme. It has been prepared on the basis of initial feed-back received to the Priority Assessment Survey. It will be up-dated regularly to take account of new feed back received.
