  • > Meeting of Experts on Gender and Science and Technology - Updated: 10-09-2004 7:57 am
A draft recommendation aiming to integrate gender perspectives into the science and technology policies of Organization of American States (OAS) Member States was drawn up at the Expert Meeting, Washington, USA, 24-25 August 2004.

This document will be examined at the First Meeting of Ministers and High Authorities on Science and Technology in the framework of CIDI-OAS to take place in Lima, Peru, 11-12 November 2004 with, on the Agenda, the elaboration of strategies to put science and technology at the service of economical and social development in both North and South America.

Around twenty experts from various countries participated in the expert meeting: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico, Panama, Saint Lucia, Salvador, Uruguay, USA as well as several international organizations: UNESCO, CEPAL, PAHO.

Political personalities were also present, including Charlotte Pontini from the US State Department.

Discussions were based on two working documents: one examining the gender theme from an international point of view by Sophia Huyer, Executive Director of GAB-UNCSTD, the other more particularly focused on the situation in South America by Gloria Bonder, responsible for the UNESCO Chair in Latin America “Women, science and technology”.

Based on a recommendation of the World Conference on Science (paragraph 90 of its Science Agenda) to launch an inter-agency global campaign to raise awareness of the contribution of women to science and technology, it was proposed that OAS, UNCSTD, UNESCO and other agencies organize such a campaign. Target groups would be political decision makers, scientific communities, those involved in development and the general public.
