Welcome to the new HABSEA portal
The Southeast Asian Region is composed of the following countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, most of which are coastal and consisting of many islands particularly the Philippines (ca. 7,000) and Indonesia (ca. 13,700). Coastal families are heavily dependent on fishery harvest and culture for their daily sustenance and livelihood.
This portal (HABSEA) has been created to help educate and empower the various sectors of the society of this region particularly those involved in understanding and managing Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) that could adversely affect human health and the fisheries, if not properly managed.
This is the gateway to HAB information in Asia initially emanating from the South East Asian countries. Information will range from the varied interpretation of HABs which is commonly referred to as Red Tides or Toxic Plankton Occurrence, scientific background about the causative organisms, their life cycles, interaction with the environment, degree of occurence, management strategies instituted, and varied source learning to enhance understanding of the phenomemon. We hope you find this portal very useful and in turn we welcome any contribution to this site to make it more beneficial.
