Providing life-long education and literacy-learning for young people and adults is one of the objectives of the Education for All programme. The implementation of both initiatives would contribute significantly to the reduction of poverty and to fostering women’s education, among other objectives. These, are essential elements for materialising the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Improving the quality of literacy initiatives, and youth and adult education programmes, is one of OREALC/UNESCO Santiago priorities. In collaboration with regional governments and civil society, and in the framework of the Regional Education Project for Latin America and the Caribbean (PRELAC), it provides technical support, conducts research, and disseminates and evaluates innovative programmes in these areas.

OREALC/UNESCO Santiago plays a leading role in the framework of the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003-2012), and as one of the major actors at the Sixth International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VI) to be held in Brazil (May 2009).
