Project
Education for Coexistence and a Culture of Peace in Latin America

    • Objectives:
    Contribute to the design and implementation of educational policies that strengthen democratic coexistence and the culture of peace in schools, through three major lines of action:

    1. Generating information and knowledge on:
    • A theoretical framework and indicators suitable for describing the situation of school coexistence at the institutional level (Module 1);
    • The instruments that measure the acquisition of democratic coexistence and culture of peace competences among students (Module 2);
    • A database on programmes, research studies, innovative experiences, and materials associated with coexistence and a culture of peace (Module 3).
    • The curricula and institutional spaces underpinning teacher training in the areas of coexistence and culture of peace (Module 4).
    • How does the teaching of science foster democratic coexistence and the culture of peace (Module 5).
    • The characteristics of education innovations related to democratic coexistence and a culture of peace (Module 6).

    2. Construction and strengthening of local capacities:
    • Training school principals in leadership based on harmonious and non-violent school coexistence (Module 7).

    3. Mobilising actors:
    • Associated Schools’ competition on the contribution of science to education for peace and coexistence (Module 8).
    • Committing relevant social actors to the construction of a democratic education and a culture of peace (Module 9).

    OREALC/UNESCO Santiago

    • Beneficiaries:
    Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Panama, Paraguay, and Venezuela.

    • Duration:
    October 2007 - September 2008

    • Plan of activities:
    The Project is structured around several independent modules each of which incorporates its own plan of activities under the coordination of a different OREALC/UNESCO Santiago specialist.
    • Module 1 – coordinated by the Regional Information System.
    • Module 2 – under the responsibility of the Latin American Laboratory for Assessment of the Quality of Education.
    • Module 3 – under the responsibility of the Coexistence and Human Rights Programme.
    • Module 4 – under the responsibility of the Teacher Professional Development team.
    • Module 5 – under the responsibility of the Scientific and Secondary Education team.
    • Module 6 – under the responsibility of the Innovemos Network.
    • Module 7 – under the responsibility of the Leadership Network. More
    • Module 8 – under the responsibility of the Associated Schools Network.
    • Module 9 – under the responsibility of the Commitment and Social Participation with Education Programme.

    • Participating organisations:
    OREALC/UNESCO Santiago; UNESCO Quito (Cluster Office); UNESCO San Jose (Cluster Office for Central America); UNESCO Cluster Office La Havana; UNESCO Brasilia; UNESCO Mexico; Peru.
