As a first activity of the development stage of the Regional Information System on Special Education Needs, a consultation with the nineteen Latin American SIRNEE countries was conducted for the purpose of determining the type of information on SEN students being collected, its suitability for monitoring their current status, and the formulation and follow-up of dynamic policies.
In order to contextualise the analysis, participating countries were asked to submit concepts, definitions, and classifications associated with special education needs, in addition to regulatory and legal frameworks currently in force or pending approval.
This document, which contains a systematised account of the feedback provided by countries in response to this consultation, will facilitate the construction of a preliminary overall picture of available information on special education needs and their main characteristics. It includes the different definitions and classifications being used within and across countries, and illustrates the challenge SIRNEE must overcome in terms of generating a set of conceptual and methodological agreements that guarantee the availability of comparable information in the region.
