Background - Koen earned a diploma in Visual Arts as well as a Masterís in Fine Arts from the National Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Antwerp (Belgium).
He has worked in many countries, but during the last 10 years has spent long periods on Siberut Island, West Sumatra, Indonesia, where he has conducted extensive research on the socio-cultural conditions of the Mentawai people.
UNESCO - Koen joined UNESCO Office, Jakarta in 1998. He has been working on Siberut since 1998 as the coordinator for UNESCOís Siberut Biosphere Reserve Programme. He is now a Technical Adviser for Environmental Sciences.
