Education
Introduction
The UNESCO Office in Jakarta has developed and implemented projects in Indonesia, Philippines, and Malaysia with the main aim of supporting Governments’ efforts in meeting the goals of the global Education for All Programme (EFA) with alacrity so as to cope with the aftermath of the profound economic crisis that have occurred in the region.
Major emphasis of our activities was placed in encouraging and supporting reforms in the development of more qualitative, effective and efficient education systems, by assisting people, particularly marginalized groups, coping with the raised widespread poverty, and dealing with social conflicts while competing more effectively in the global market.
We have specifically focused our efforts on improving the quality of primary education by removing barriers to participation and learning, as well as experimenting with innovative solutions for the effective and adequate provision of appropriate out-of school education for disadvantaged women, children in difficult circumstances and in poor and remote areas, children with special needs as well as illiterate and unskilled adults.
We have also endeavoured to enhance understanding and education on peace, human rights, tolerance, gender awareness, life skills, and social protection programmes.
It is our sincere hope that these attempts can support a sustainable recovery in the education systems and build pathways toward a better life for the many disadvantaged in united harmony.
