UNESCO is one of a few development agencies in Nepal that is active in the area of culture. Under UNESCO's regular programme for Culture, the Office in Kathmandu has been conducting a wide variety of programmes.

Nepal is home to four World Heritage Sites, therefore the Kathmandu Office has emphasised the protection and preservation of Nepal's most important heritage. In particular, since the In Danger Listing of the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage Site in 2003, the office has concentrated its efforts in addressing the many issues that affect the conservation of this site.
