Communication and information hold the key to development in the 21st century. An inclusive knowledge society requires the effective harnessing of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) to combat poverty and foster development.
UNESCO's communication and information programmes in the Pacific aim to help achieve:
Access - Access information and knowledge for all
Content - Promoting diversity of content in the media and information networks
Capacities - Strenghthening information and communication capacities
Media - Defending freedom of expression, pluralism and independence of media
Communication and Information Projects are supported by two intergovernmental programmes:
International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC) assists the development of communication infrastructure and professional training in order to reduce the gap between countries in the communication field
Information for All Programme (IFAP) provides a platform for international policy discussions and guidelines for action on the preservation of information and universal access to it
