In a joint working session held in Santiago on 12 April, the two institutions will search for collaboration opportunities in order to create, promote, and implement strategies oriented towards sustainable social and economic development. The talks will centre on joint working proposals to track the major issues discussed at the Rio+20 Earth Summit (20-22 June, 2012), such as sustainable development and the green economy.

The Planet Earth Institute (PEI), based in London, UK, and the Regional Bureau of Education for Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC/UNESCO Santiago) are to hold a working session in which they will explore possible areas of shared interest and joint actions. The meeting will be attended by OREALC/UNESCO Santiago Director Jorge Sequeira; Planet Earth Institute CEO Mauricio Fernandes; Astrid Hollander, an assistant programme specialist in education for sustainable development and Technical and Professional Education; assistant programme specialist Pamela Orgeldinger; and Celine Lafoucriere, Programme Specialist in Technical Education and Professional Training.

The Planet Earth Institute (PEI) is the natural successor to the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE), an initiative launched for the triennium of 2007-2009 and implemented by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).The IYPE was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly with the unanimous consent and support of all 192 Member States, and was given the task of identifying and addressing the most significant global challenges facing our planet. It aims to encourage better planning and management in the sustainable use of earth materials.
