The objective of the study is to obtain information regarding the initiatives the countries have undertaken at a regional, sub-regional and national level in education for sustainable development and/or in environmental education, within the framework of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD). The aim is to gain insight into the progress the UNDESD has achieved at the policy level in the region. Regional, sub-regional and national initiatives are understood to mean commitments, policies, strategies, plans and/or programmes applied at the policy level. The specific objectives of the study include: to gain knowledge regarding the main characteristics of the progress of the UNDESD in the region and the regional, sub-regional and national initiatives that Latin American and Caribbean countries have undertaken within the UNDESD framework.

UNESCO’s Regional Bureau of Education for Latin America and the Caribbean (OREALC/UNESCO) is carrying out this study, within the UNDESD framework, through its Regional Education for Sustainable Development Programme and the Regional Project “Leading the UNDESD in Latin America and the Caribbean”, funded by the Government of Japan.
