Prepared by a study group set up by the Executive Board of the International Council for Science (ICSU), following a resolution adopted by the 26th General Assembly of ICSU held in Cairo in September 1999.

In Cairo, the ICSU General Assembly considered the results of the UNESCO-ICSU World Conference on Science, which had taken place three months earlier in Budapest, particularly as embodied in two principal documents: ‘Declaration on Science and the Use of Scientific Knowledge’ and ‘Science Agenda --Framework for Action’. These two documents were unanimously adopted by the ICSU General Assembly in Cairo.

In respect to traditional knowledge, the General Assembly acknowledged “the importance of empirical knowledge built up over generations and grounded in practical evidence but emphasized at the same time that such knowledge must be distinguished from approaches that seek to promote anti-science and pseudo-science.”

In this vein, the ICSU General Assembly requested the ICSU Executive Board to carry out a critical study of this issue. An ad-hoc ICSU study group was established in mid-2001 for this purpose. The group met on three occasions during the period October 2001-January 2002, with its report due to be considered by the next session of the ICSU General Assembly in Rio de Janeiro in September 2002.

The report is available electronically. A paper version of the report (‘Science, Traditional Knowledge and Sustainable Development’), prepared by ICSU and UNESCO, has been published as ICSU Series on Science for Sustainable Development No. 4. This report makes the findings and conclusions of the study group available to a larger public in the context of the World Summit on Sustainable Development.
