As a founding Cosponsor of UNAIDS, Mr Matsuura said he was happy with the excellent cooperation between UNESCO and UNAIDS that has grown and strengthened over the past 13 years.
Mr Matsuura paid tribute to the first eight months of Mr Sidibé’s term as the new Executive Director of UNAIDS, a role Mr Sidibé took on since the beginning of January 2009. For his part, Mr Sidibé praised the unwavering and strong leadership that Mr Matsuura has demonstrated in support of HIV prevention efforts.
The Director-General expressed his particular satisfaction that HIV prevention education is now a major pillar of UNAIDS activities, included as a priority action area within empowering young people in a new strategic UNAIDS Outcome Framework 2009-2011. Mr Matsuura also thanked Mr Sidibé for the substantial increases in the amount of funding UNAIDS provides to UNESCO in support of its education work on HIV and AIDS through the Unified Budget and Workplan, totalling $12.3 million for the biennium 2010-2011.
Mr Sidibé and Mr Matsuura also discussed how UNESCO and UNAIDS would work together with UNFPA, UNICEF and other key partners to improve and finalise a draft set of voluntary international guidelines on sexuality education designed to strengthen HIV prevention education efforts with young people, supporting parents, communities and teachers.
