Mr Matsuura expressed on this occasion his high satisfaction for the continuous and fruitful cooperation established between UNESCO and Ukraine in all the Organization’s fields of competences. He informed His Beatitude of the recent development of this cooperation, notably mentioning the visit held by Ms Kateryna Yushenko on the occasion of the nomination of Vitaliy and Wladimir Klitschko as UNESCO Champions for Sport (see Flash Info n°195). The Director General informed the Head of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the establishment of the International Children Centre ARTEK (see Flash Info n°175), the first UNESCO Category II Centre explicitly devoted to the needs and interests of young people. Mr Matsuura welcomed its establishment as “a most valuable tool for realizing the objectives of the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World, as well as for advancing UNESCO’s mandate to mainstream the needs and requirements of youth in all the programme areas of the Organization.
Concerning cultural cooperation, Mr Matsuura recalled the exhibition dedicated to the Trypillya civilization, opened by President Yushchenko on the occasion of the UNESCO’s 60th anniversary ceremony. The Director-General congratulated His Beatitude on the state of conservation of the Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. “I visited the monastery, which is inscribed on the World Heritage List, during my most recent visit to Ukraine,” said Mr Matsuura, “I have full confidence in your ability to maintain and preserve this important site for humanity.”
For his part His Beatitude welcomed UNESCO’s increased cooperation with Ukraine and expressed his readiness to support the Organization’s actions in the field of inter religious dialogue and cultural diversity.
During the talks between Mr Matsuura and His Beatitude they also exchanged views on dialogue among civilizations, culture, interfaith relations covering best practices on promoting religious tolerance and the state of relations between UNESCO and Ukraine.
