UNESCO –ECOWAS Joint Commission, Abuja, 21 June 2006

During his official visit to Nigeria (21-22 June) the Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura and Dr Chambas, the Executive Secretary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) co-presided the 2nd UNESCO-ECOWAS Joint Commission in Abuja at ECOWAS Headquarters.

The aim of this 2nd session was to evaluate the level of implementation of the recommendations that arose from the first meeting, which took place in Paris in September 2000, and to discuss how best to strategize and coordinate the future activities of the two Organizations in the sub-region.

Speaking at the opening of the Joint Commission, the Director-General stressed the importance of ECOWAS-UNESCO cooperation and action in Africa. He indicated that UNESCO’s programmes are aligned with the development goals of the region through strengthening of its collaboration with ECOWAS and other Regional Economic Communities. To this effect, he recalled the establishment of the Forum for African Regional and Sub-regional Organizations in support of cooperation between UNESCO and NEPAD for the achievement of the objectives of regional integration through education, science, culture and communication.

Both UNESCO and ECOWAS expressed their satisfaction at the progress made during the 2nd meeting of the Joint Commission and agreed that the next meeting will be held in Paris in 2008.
