Suite de l'article en anglais :

The initiative aims to support the implementation of Chapter 17 of Agenda 21 dealing with Oceans and Coasts, which was adopted at the 1992 Earth Summit. The UN Atlas of the Ocean will provide the principal gateway to detailed information on oceans for policy-makers, resource managers, industry workers and facilitate the access to the extensive data-bases of the UN to NGOs, the media, scientists and students. With the collaboration of a private publisher, CD-ROMs will be produced to make the Atlas available even where Internet access is limited.

The Atlas is a joint project of several UN agencies --- FAO, the lead agency for the project, and IOC of UNESCO, UNEP, IMO, IAEA and the WMO are all contributing ocean-related information from their own areas of expertise. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity has also joined the project. Major national agencies, such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States and the Head Department of Navigation and Oceanography of the Russian Federation, are assisting the project as well.
