The aim of the exhibition is to demonstrate to visitors UNESCO’s concept of the intangible cultural heritage, why it is important to safeguard it and how that can be done. The Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is presented, along with programs and activities of the Intangible Heritage Section.
The exhibition displays audio recordings, films, photographs and objects related to such expression of the intangible cultural heritage as the Ningyo Johruri Bunraku puppet theatre (Japan), the Carnival de Binche (Belgium), the Tar music from Azerbaijan and the Zafimaniry woodcraft (Madagascar). There is also a traditional music corner with computers where visitors can listen to a selection of the UNESCO Collection of Traditional Music of the World; other displays inform about UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage related activities and ACCU’s databank of the Asian performing arts.
