| | UNESCO and New Zealand: Continuing Cooperation

29-04-2003 - The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, met with the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Ms Helen Clark, on Monday 28 April. This was their second meeting, the first having been held in Johannesburg, South Africa, on the occasion of the World Summit for Sustainable Development on 3 September 2002. Yesterday’s discussions focused on the cooperation between UNESCO and New Zealand particularly in the areas of education and culture for the Pacific sub region. |
Mr Matsuura and Ms Clark signed an arrangement between UNESCO and the Government of New Zealand on cooperation with other State parties in the Asia-Pacific region concerning the protection and promotion of World Cultural and Natural Heritage, with particular emphasis on the Pacific sub region. Both parties will support the regional implementation of the World Heritage Convention, promote best practices in their management, aid in the collection of financial assistance, and further develop networks with a view to exchanging information and experience.
The Prime Minister expressed the Government of New Zealand's willingness to contribute to the work of UNESCO in the joint UNESCO/ITU initiative on the World Summit for Information Society and participate in a Round Table of Ministers of Information to be organized by UNESCO in October 2003. The Director-General and the Prime Minister also exchanged views on the quality of education and the importance of implementing quantitative targets in basic education in order to, among others, eliminate gender disparity and reduce adult illiteracy.
Mr Matsuura will visit New Zealand from 1 to 5 February 2004 after attending a round-table meeting in Samoa with Ministers of Education of the South Pacific region next January.
