Le Sommet mondial sur le développement durable s'est tenu à Johannesbourg du 26 août au 4 septembre 2002.
L'UNESCO a été impliquée dans un bon nombre d'événements, manifestations et initiatives de partenariat qui se sont déroulés en marge du sommet mondial.
Depuis longtemps, l'Organisation s’intéresse aux questions liées au développement durable. Elle a ainsi largement contribué aux courants d'idées et aux actions qui ont suivi la Conférence de l’ONU sur l’environnement et le développement (Rio 1992).
Les contributions de l'UNESCO au Sommet mondial concernent les champs de son mandat : l’éducation, les sciences, la culture etla communication. Ces contributions trouvent aussi leur inspiration dans des documents tels que sa stratégie à moyen terme pour 2002-2007, une résolution de la Conférence générale relative au Sommet mondial de Johannesbourg, la décaration du millénaire de l'ONU ainsi que des plans d'action issus d'événements tels que Conférence mondiale sur l'enseignement supérieur, le Forum de Dakar sur l'Education pour tous , la Conférence mondiale des sciences de Budapest ou encore la Conférence mondiale sur la culture et le développement de Stockholm.
