03-10-2002 10:00 pm Paris - In an event to mark World Space Week 2002, 17-year-old Carike Bosman from Pretoria (South Africa), will receive the first prize of an international essay contest sponsored by UNESCO in a ceremony hosted by the European Space Agency's Research and Technology Centre (ESA/ESTEC) in Noordwijk (Netherlands) on October 7. The essay contest was held earlier this year to encourage high school students to share their vision of space and society in the coming decades. Carike Bosman will receive US$1,000 and a certificate while her school, Hoërskool Eldoraigne, will be given US$500.
Divya Vaze also aged 17, from Hong Kong (China) won the second prize (US$800) while three laureates were chosen for the 3rd prize of US$500 each: Jennifer Przybylo (17) from Illinois (USA); Phleappe Vwyioslf De Vera (17) from Pangasinan (Philippines); and Kim Derose (15) from California, (USA).

A special UNESCO Prize for Developing Countries went to 15-year-old Lesieli Matonga Ahomana from Niuatoputapu (Tonga). A special ESA Prize went to 16-year-old Alastair Evans from Surrey (UK).

The first UN World Space Week was held in 2000. The UN General Assembly chose the date of October 4 to commemorate the launch of the first artificial satellite, Sputnik-1 on that day in 1957. And October 10 is the date the General Assembly adopted its Outer Space Treaty in 1967.

As in the two previous World Space Weeks, countries all over the world are holding special events, including talks, film screenings, exhibitions and competitions for schools.

UNESCO is involved in World Space Week through its Space Education Project that started earlier this year. This project is a response to recommendations of the World Conference on Science (1999) to further understanding and awareness of science and technology issues by the general public, in particular students and teachers.
