Este elemento no está disponible en Español.Está disponible actualmente en Inglés, Francés.

17-06-2002 - - On 18 June 2002, UNESCO's Director-General, Koïchiro Matsuura, met with Professor Luc Montagnier and Professor Robert Gallo, the co-discoverers of the HIV virus.

Mr Gallo is head of the Institute for Human Virology at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, Maryland, United States of America, and Mr Montagnier who recently retired from the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France, where he originally made his groundbreaking discovery, now heads the World Foundation on AIDS Research and Prevention, with which UNESCO has cooperated since its establishment in 1993.

Mr Montagnier and Mr Gallo announced in February 2002 that they would collaborate to develop AIDS vaccines for Africa and other developing regions. At today's meeting with the Director-General, they discussed their new project and other initiatives that they have taken to reduce both the spread and impact of the disease in Africa and Central America, and for which they are currently seeking funds.

The two professors expressed their interest in continued support from UNESCO. The Director-General commended Mr Montagnier and Mr Gallo for their contributions to science and HIV/AIDS prevention and expressed his interest in finding areas where concrete cooperation can be pursued.

As of today some 60 million people have been infected, a third of whom have already died, and the epidemic has had a devastating impact on many developing countries. UNESCO has a comprehensive programme in HIV/AIDS preventive education to combat the epidemic and is one of the cosponsors of UNAIDS. The Organization’s activities are directed towards five core tasks: advocacy at all levels, customizing the message, changing risk behaviour, caring for the infected and the affected and coping with the impact. UNESCO is doing its utmost to implement the Declaration of Commitment adopted at the United Nations General Assembly special session on HIV/AIDS in June 2001. These effortsare mainly focused in the countries hardest hit by this scourge, in particular in sub-Saharan Africa.
