UNESCO celebrates a Week of Sport

The educational, ethical and social dimensions of sport will be highlighted during a week of “Sport for Peace and Development”, to be celebrated at UNESCO Headquarters from 17 to 23 July.

The celebrations will begin on 17 July (5p.m. to 7 p.m, Salle des Pas Perdus/ Salle Miro) with the inauguration of two exhibitions dedicated to physical education and sport, a performance of African music and a demonstration of traditional wrestling from Central Asia.

Several personalities from the world of sports will be present at the opening, including footballers Didier Drogba (Côte d’Ivoire), Roger Milla and Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon), Olympic alpine skiing champion Rosi Mittermaier-Neureuther (Germany) and swimmer Gordon Kozulj (Croatia).

The two exhibitions include 12 sport murals that are part of the “Art Miles Mural Project” which is creating the world’s longest painting combining 1500 murals on several themes for inclusion in the “Exhibition of the Century in 2010”, and “150 years of Physical Education and Sport”, comprising 30 panels illustrating the history and evolution of gymnastics and physical education and sport in French schools from 1850 to 2005.

The works will be on display at UNESCO Headquarters until 10 August.
