Launched in 1953, ASPnet promotes the ideals of UNESCO through a worldwide network which includes over 6,700 educational institutions ranging from pre-school education to teacher training in 166 countries.

The current strategy and plan of action of ASPnet places emphasis on reinforcing the four pillars of Learning for the 21st Century (learning to know, to do, to be and to live together) and promoting quality education as outlined in Dakar Framework of Action on Education for All pilot projects are carried out in favour of better preparing children and young people to meet effectively the challenges of an increasingly complex and interdependent world. ASPnet has been closely involved in the multimedia teacher education programme ‘Teaching and Learning for a Sustainable Future’. Other recent projects include the testing of a young person’s guide to the World Heritage (jointly with the World Heritage Centre) and of an educational kit on desertification (in collaboration with the MAB Programme and the UN Convention to Combat Desertication).
