The roots of education for sustainable development are firmly planted in environmental education, which in the early 1970s was given a powerful boost by the UN Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm in 1972.

Among the follow-up actions was the launching in 1975 by UNESCO and UNEP of the International Environmental Education Programme (IEEP), which continued until 1995. Ongoing activities under UNESCO’s work on science and technology education include updating of the International Directory of Environmental Education Institutions and a periodic newsletter Connect.
