20-05-2005 - On 16 May 2005, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, paid his first visit to the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy.

ICTP is a Category I UNESCO Centre that provides access for scientists from developing countries to state-of-the-art research activities thus helping them overcome their relative isolation. The purpose of the Director-General’s visit was to better acquaint himself with the activities of the Centre, and to present the 2004 ICTP Prize. The visit also forms part of the celebration of the International Year of Physics (2005) to promote the contribution of physics to the development of science and technology.

Beyond acquainting himself with the ICTP campus and its dedicated staff members, the visit enabled the Director-General to meet members of the Italian community, both regional and national, who have welcomed and provided support to the Centre since its creation 40 years ago. Of particular note, the Director-General held fruitful talks with Senator Roberto Antonione, Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, in the presence of Ambassador Caruso, Italian Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, during which he was able to express his gratitude for the strong support of the Italian Authorities both for ICTP and for the UNESCO Venice Office, and to discuss how the collaboration between UNESCO and Trieste’s scientific community can be further strengthened.

The Director-General’s visit to ICTP was also the occasion to meet with Professor C. N. R. Rao, President of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (formerly Third World Academy of Science – TWAS), located on the Centre’s campus. Professor Rao briefed Mr Matsuura on the Academy’s history, structure (including its various networks of scientist and science academies), its activities, and its aspirations for the future.

The 2004 ICTP Prize, in honour of Arthur Taylor Winfree, was presented to Professor Bernardo Gabriel Mindlin of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, for his important contributions to the fundamental, applied and interdisciplinary aspects of nonlinear dynamical systems. Present at the prize-giving ceremony were Professors C. N. R. Rao and Renato Angelo Ricci, Honourary President of the Italian Physical Society, as well as Mr Victorio Maria Jose Taccetti, Argentinean Ambassador in Rome. The ICTP Prize was created in 1982 by the ICTP Scientific Council to recognise outstanding and original contributions of young scientists (no more than 40 years of age) from developing countries to physics and mathematics. The prize is awarded annually in honour of an eminent scientist and includes a sculpture, certificate and cash prize.
