03-05-2005 3:30 pm “Tsunamis: Forecasting and Prevention” is the theme of the next session of the 21st Century Talks, which will take place on May 10 (6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.) at UNESCO Headquarters (Room XII). Three well-known figures will take part: Claude Allègre, Emile A. Okal and Patricio Bernal.
This 28th session will be opened and chaired by UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura. Jérôme Bindé, Deputy Assistant Director-General for Social Sciences and Director of the Division of Foresight, Philosophy and Human Sciences, will moderate the debate.

Claude Allègre is a geophysicist and a member of France's Academy of Sciences. He is the former director of the Institute of Global Physics and France's former minister for education, research and technology (1997-2000). He has published several works including Economiser la planète, Histoire de terre, Un peu de science pour tout le monde, Géologie isotopique and Quand on sait tout on ne prevoit rien … et quand on ne sait rien on prevoit tout.

Geophysicist Emile A. Okal is one of the world's pre-eminent experts on tsunamis. A professor in the Department of Geological Sciences at Northwestern University (United States), Okal is a member of the American Geophysical Union and the Seismological Society of America, and has contributed to numerous publications. He has written several articles including “Seismology: Speed and size of the Sumatra earthquake”, which recently appeared in the magazine Nature.

Patricio Bernal, UNESCO Deputy Director-General and Executive Secretary of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), is responsible for UNESCO's worldwide scientific programme on oceans. He will be the main speaker for this latest edition of the 21st Century Talks. The IOC is coordinating the implementation of the worldwide tsunami early warning system, starting with the Indian Ocean region.
