30-03-2005 3:00 pm Renowned French theatre director Ariane Mnouchkine and the theatre company she founded in Paris in 1964, the Théâtre du Soleil, will receive the UNESCO Picasso Medal on the occasion of World Theatre Day in a ceremony on Thursday, March 31, at 8 p.m. (UNESCO Headquarters, Room XI). Manfred Beilharz, President of the International Theatre Institute, and Gérard Mortier, Director of the Paris National Opera, will be among those taking part in the ceremony.
mnouchkine_250.jpg The medal-award ceremony will be followed by Ms Mnouchkine’s reading of her message for World Theatre Day and a roundtable debate about the Théâtre du Soleil and its place in the world. Some ten participants will take part in the discussion, including Ariane Mnouchkine herself, Manfred Beilharz, and Gérard Mortier, as well as French academic Alain Berthoz and the theatre director Jean-Pierre Guingané of Burkina Faso.

A film of Ms Mnouchkine’s Théâtre du Soleil production Tambours sur la digue, written by Hélène Cixous, will be screened at 4 p.m. with English subtitles.

World Theatre Day was created in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI). The Day is celebrated on March 27 every year by ITI’s national centres and by the international theatre community.

The International Theatre Institute was created on June 28, 1948 at UNESCO’s initiative during a theatre congress in Prague.

The UNESCO Picasso Medal, created on the centenary of Pablo Picasso’s birth in 1981, is awarded to individuals or groups, in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the arts or culture.
