An exhibition of the winning selections of the Humanity Photo Awards (HPA) was inaugurated at the United Nations Pavilion on 28 March at Expo 2005.

hpalarge.gif Photographers from over 80 countries are exhibiting their photos which are among the prize winning entries from the past four Humanity Photo Awards. The exhibition at the UN Pavilion represents diverse aspects of humanity and in particular human rites and festivals; crafts, food and different human portraits, each one of them displayed on a different wall.

The Humanity Photo Awards contest aims to foster mutual understanding and interaction across cultural, geographical and political frontiers by recording and preserving cultural heritage through images. The 2006 competition will begin on 1 September 2005 (www.china-fpa.org).

The Humanity Photo Awards are sponsored by UNESCO and the China Folklore Photographic Association, the largest photographic organization in China. Under the leadership of Shen Che, the association currently has over 30,000 members. The China Folklore Photographic Association works to enhance cultural exchange and mutual understanding, to promote peace and development and to encourage the independent recording of cultures and their various manifestations through traditional and creative activities.

Within the overall Expo 2005 theme of Nature’s Wisdom, the United Nations chose Celebrating Diversity as its unifying theme with the sub-themes of ‘People and the Environment’, ‘Cultural Diversity’, ‘Biodiversity’ and ‘Peace and Security’.

The UN Pavilion offers the visitor a state of the art video gallery that represents a sample of the United Nations’ work throughout the world, an exhibit on the wisdom of ageing, prize winning photographs on the environment, and a theatre that will host a rotating program of films and cultural performances.
