For UNESCO, mainstreaming gender in sustainable development means committing to human security - a concept that encompasses ecological, economic, social, cultural and personal security for women and men alike.
In particular:
Promoting Education for All, notably girls, young and adult women's education as a fundamental human right; working for gender equality in education at all levels, in all its forms and in all fields, throughout life.
Women and men having equal access to science and technology.
Upholding cultural diversity and pluralism with emphasis on women's human rights.
Equal access to and representation in the media and information and communication technologies.
Engendering participatory democracies by providing for real equality between women and men.
