07-01-2005 5:00 pm The third session of the intergovernmental meeting of experts on the preliminary draft of the International Convention Against Doping in Sport* will take place at UNESCO Headquarters from January 10 to 15. During the meeting, some 200 participants are expected to finalize the text that will be submitted to the 33rd session of UNESCO’s General Conference in October for adoption ahead of the 2006 Winter Olympics (Turin, Italy). The preliminary draft of the Convention was written in the course of two intergovernmental meetings, which took place at Organization Headquarters in January and May 2004. Observations regarding the text were made during the Fourth International Conference of Ministers and Senior Officials Responsible for Sport and Physical Education (MINEPS IV), which took place in Athens last December.

Ministers and senior officials in charge of sport and physical education from 103 countries in January 2003 recommended that UNESCO develop a convention against doping that is both universal and legally binding.
