20-02-2004 4:45 pm The winner of the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize, Shirin Ebadi (Iran), will attend an International Conference on Religions and Democracy to be held at UNESCO Headquarters on February 24 and 25.


The conference is organized by the Association du Dialogue Interculturel and Interreligieux (ADICR), with support from the Islamic Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and UNESCO, and will be attended by researchers, academics, legal and human rights experts.

Opening speakers will include UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura, ISESCO Director-General Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijiri, Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi, the Deputy-Mayor of Toulouse Philippe Douste-Blazy, Metropolitan of the Greek Orthodox Community in Beirut, Elias Audi, and the President of the ADICR Samar Sassine.

Discussions will be based on three themes: Democracy and Pluralist Societies (Feb. 24, 11.15 am to 1pm); Different testimonies (Feb. 24, 3pm to 5.30 pm), and Does the separation of culture and religion in a society consolidate democracy? (Feb. 25 2.30 pm to 5.30pm).
