02-10-2003 4:30 pm More than 220 renowned musicians are to give an exceptional concert at UNESCO called "Dialogue of Cultures – 300 years of the city of Saint Petersburg" on Saturday October 4 (in Room I, 7.30 p.m.).
Peters_insid.jpg The Symphonic Orchestra, which will bring together young musicians from the Mariinsky (formerly Kirov) Theatre and the Saint Petersburg State Conservatory, will be conducted by Roderic von Bennigsen (Germany). It will play the first movement of Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony.

The first movement of Beethoven's Triple Concerto will be performed by UNESCO's Artist for Peace Sergei Markarov (Russia, piano), the Director of Marseille's National Conservatory, Philip Bride (France, violin) and the Rector of the Saint Petersburg State Conservatory, Sergei Roldugin (Russia, cello).

The Japanese soprano Shiko Kanno will sing “Arsace”, an aria from Rossini's opera Semiramide. Khachaturian's Toccata will be performed by Sergei Markarov. The 120 singers of the Paris Symphonic Choir, conducted by Xavier Ricour and accompanied by 100 musicians from Saint Petersburg, will sing in Russian the second, fourth and seventh movements of Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky Cantata.

The event, whose theme is dialogue between cultures, will be opened by UNESCO Director-General Koïchiro Matsuura, the First Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Eleonora Mitrofanova, and Russia's Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Ambassador Vladimir Kalamanov. The Director General of UNESCO will give Dialogue of Cultures medals to several cultural institutions, including the Saint Petersburg State Conservatory, Marseille's National Conservatory, the Von Bennigsen Foundation-International Humanitas Association, the Hiroshima Symphony Association and the Yamaha Piano company.

The concert is being organized by and with the support of Russia's Ministry of Culture, UNESCO's Goodwill Ambassador for intercultural dialogue, Ara Abramian, and the Russian electricity distribution company, RAO UES. Radio France and Russia's National Reserve Bank are also associated with this important cultural event, which is taking place during the 32nd session of UNESCO's General Conference.
