27-08-2003 9:00 am This week, UNESCO launched a 3-months training programme for the staff of ERTV, Afghanistan’s Educational Radio Television. Thanks to this programme, ERTV staff will gain professional knowledge and skills in key areas such as: TV and radio techniques, use of digital equipment (radio and television), programme production, English language and computer literacy.

ERTVtraining-Begana_lg.jpg The programme has been designed - and will be implemented - exclusively with Afghan institutions, in particular the Faculty of Journalism of the University of Kabul, Afghan Films and the computer training facility of the Ministry of Education. “The programme has a unique approach, in the sense that it is designed and carried out by Afghans for Afghans”, stated the UNESCO Officer-in-Charge, at the launching ceremony which brought together the more than fifty future trainees.

During the ceremony, the Faculty of Journalism of the University of Kabul and Afghan Films, the two main institutional partners in the conception and implementation of the training, expressed their commitment to the revitalization of ERTV and the upgrading of its staff. In turn, the Director of ERTV, Mr. Begana, stressed the fact that high-quality professionals were indispensable for ERTV to meet the challenge of delivering modern and efficient educational radio and television services, capable of meeting the huge educational needs of Afghan women and men.

At the end of the 3-month course, those trainees who will prove to be most successful will be offered the opportunity to receive more advanced training aboard.

This training programme is part of a larger UNESCO-implemented project to rehabilitate the Educational Radio Television of Afghanistan, funded by the Government of Italy. The project also includes the complete rehabilitation, refurbishment and re-equipment of the ERTV building, which are currently in progress.
