Koichiro Matsuura: «El destino del patrimonio iraquí está en manos del conjunto de la comunidad internacional» - (Gabinete del Director General)
17-04-2003 - El Director General de la UNESCO, Koichiro Matsuura, hizo la siguiente declaración ante los expertos internacionales congregados por iniciativa suya en la sede de la Organización el 17 de abril: «A pesar de vuestra competencia y buena voluntad, el futuro del patrimonio iraquí no está en vuestras manos, sino en las del conjunto de la comunidad internacional. Solo gracias a la cohesión, la coordinación y la voluntad común de todos los protagonistas, a todos los niveles, podremos salvar esos tesoros y volverlos a poner a disposición de la humanidad». El Sr. Matsuura volvió a hacer un llamamiento a todos los Estados para que adopten «las medidas jurídicas y administrativas urgentes que se imponen para impedir que se exporten a sus territorios cualquier clase de bienes culturales, arqueológicos y bibliográficos que hayan salido de Irak en el momento presente», y se dirigió también a «todos los museos, marchantes de obras de arte y coleccionistas privados para que consideren que esos bienes no pueden ser objeto de transacciones comerciales». 15-04-2003 - As the evidence of the destruction of many parts of the cultural heritage in Iraq is increasing, the Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, today warned of the devastation and looting of libraries and archives in the country, which may have irreversible consequences for maintaining and strengthening the country's cultural identity. 10-04-2003 - The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura has welcomed the support shown by the Members of the UNESCO Executive Board for a full role for the Organization in Iraq. Speaking before the Executive Board on 9 April 2003, he stated “UNESCO’s experience in similar situations over recent years has shown that education and culture can play a key role in consolidating the peace process and restoring national unity”, he said. “We must be ready without delay, he added, to help restore hope for the future in the Iraqi people”.
